Tendinitis (irritation and inflammation of the tendon tissue) is the most common condition affecting the elbow. It is frequently referred to as "tennis elbow" when there is an injury to the outer tendon and "golfer's elbow" when there is an injury to the inner tendon. Tendinitis may also be caused by a variety of sports and occupational activities that lead to heavy use of the wrist and forearm muscles. This irritation causes the compartment (lining) around the tendon to swell, changing the shape of the compartment; which makes it difficult for the tendons to move as they should. The swelling can cause pain and tenderness. If symptoms persist, an orthopaedist can diagnose and provide treatment. Orthopaedists are specifically trained in the musculoskeletal system, including the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of problems involving muscles, bones, joints, ligaments and tendons. Treatment generally involves altering activities, rest and physical therapy to help you improve strength and flexibility. Medication may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and pain.
